Ex : Je vais prendre du pain. (I'll get some bread.)

To consider oneself

Ex : Il se prend pour un génie. (He thinks he's a genius.)

To start, to begin

Ex : Il s'est pris à discuter avec des inconnus. (He found himself chatting with strangers.)

Synonyms : commencer, se mettre à

To act, to proceed in such and such a way

Ex : Tu t'y prends mal. (You're doing it wrong.)    

Tu t'y prends bien. (You're doing it right.)  

Tu ne sais pas comment t'y prendre. (You don't know what to do.)

Attacking someone

Ex : Il s'en prend toujours aux plus faibles que lui. (He always picks on those weaker than himself.)

3. Prendre (intransitive)

To solidify

Ex: La confiture commence à prendre. (The jam is starting to set.)

Synonyms : coaguler, durcir, épaissir, tenir, se figer, avoir la bonne consistance, se solidifier

Performing a medical or delicate procedure

Ex : La greffe a pris. (The transplant took.)

Synonyms : réussir, s'accrocher

Start burning

Ex : Le feu a pris. (The fire started.)

4. Être pris ou se prendre (passive form)

Ex : L'animal est pris au piège. (The animal is trapped.)

Prendre sur soi (To restrain oneself)

• Ex : Après son divorce, il a pris sur lui. (After his divorce, he took it upon himself.)

Prendre quelqu'un par les sentiments (to appeal to someone’s emotions)

Prendre du plaisir à (Having fun)

Se prendre la tête (to overthink / to stress out)

• Ex : Ça me prend la tête ! (It’s driving me crazy!)
• Explication : To be irritated, to get angry

Le prendre de haut (to look down on someone / to talk down to someone)

• Ex : Il m'a parlé comme si j'étais idiote. Il m'a vraiment prise de haut. (He talked to me like I was stupid. He really talked down to me.)
• Explication : To be arrogant, proud, and condescending toward someone.

À prendre ou à laisser (Take it or leave it)

• Ex : Le prix, c’est 50 euros. C’est à prendre ou à laisser. (The price is 50 euros. Take it or leave it.)
• Explication : To give someone an ultimatum: you either accept or refuse, but there’s no negotiation.

Je t'y prends ! / Je vous y prends ! (Gotcha ... / I caught you ...)

• Ex : Ah, je t’y prends à mentir encore une fois ! (Ah, gotcha lying again! / Ah, I caught you lying again!)
• Explication : I saw your mistake / I saw what you did wrong

Tu me prends pour qui ? Pour qui me prenez-vous ? (Who do you think I am?)

Prendre la température (to take the pulse)
