Basic expressions (simple use in spoken French)

• Je veux dire… → to clarify or correct.
  Ex: J’aime ton frère... je veux dire, il est super sympa !
  → I like your brother… I mean, he’s really nice!
• C’est-à-dire… → to explain or clarify.
  Ex: On se voit demain, c’est-à-dire samedi soir.
  → We’ll see each other tomorrow, that is to say, Saturday evening.
• On dirait que… → to express an impression.
  Ex: On dirait qu’il va pleuvoir.

• Dis donc ! → to get attention or show surprise.

• Dire la vérité → to confess, to speak honestly.
  Ex: Dis la vérité : tu étais là-bas, oui ou non ?
  → Tell the truth: were you there or not?

• Ne pas dire un mot → to stay silent, to become speechless after an event.
  Ex: Après la dispute, il n’a pas dit un mot.
  → After the argument, he didn’t say a word.

• Dire du bien / dire du mal de quelqu’un → to compliment / to criticize.
  Ex: Tout le monde dit du bien d'elle au bureau.
  → Everyone says good things about her at the office.
  Ex: Il passe son temps à dire du mal de ses voisins.
  → He spends his time speaking badly about his neighbors.

• Dire amen à (familier) → to accept without questioning.
  Ex: Elle dit toujours amen à ce que son mari décide.
  → She always goes along with whatever her husband decides.

• Dire n’importe quoi / dire des sottises → to say absurd or false things.
  Ex: Arrête, tu dis n’importe quoi !
  → Stop it, you’re talking nonsense!

Idiomatic expressions with DIRE

• Autrement dit… → in other words.
  Ex: Il ne veut plus venir, autrement dit, il est fâché.
  → He doesn’t want to come anymore, in other words, he is angry.

• C’est facile à dire ! → easier said than done.
  Ex: Apprendre le français en 3 mois ? C'est facile à dire !
  → Learn French in 3 months? Easier said than done!

• À vrai dire… → to introduce a clarification or confession.
